About the Item

Pair of Charles-Honoré Lannuier Arm Chairs 2nd period, c. 1832 36 x 25 x 25 inches 18 inches seat height In 1812, Lannuier was awarded his sole known public commission: to provide armchairs for the Common Council Chamber of New York's new City Hall, the first City Hall interior to be furnished. The year before, when its exterior nearly was complete, a committee of three members, Alderman (then the name for a city councilman) Nicholas Fish and Assistants Peter Hawes and Augustine H. Lawrence, had been authorized "to procure suitable furniture" for the chamber. Following the designs of the architects Joseph Francois Mangin (about 1771-1813?), an émigré of French or West Indian ancestry about whom little is known, and John McComb, Jr., appointed architect in charge of construction, the marble-and-stone structure, an admixture of French and English Neoclassical buildings. The new City Hall was the most important edifice in New York and was lavishly praised in travelers' journals and guidebooks. One writer called it "the handsomest structure in the United States; perhaps, of its size, in the world." Lannuier's original April 25th invoice was $409 for, among other items, twenty-four mahogany armchairs, for which he charged $14 each. The upholstered-back armchairs derive from Luis XVI-style forms, but, as interpreted by Lannuier, are an amalgam of French and English designs. Each chair features a raised tablet of Crossed flags and a bowknot at the center of the crest rail, arm supports carved with a water-leaf pattern, and four inlaid brass stars at the corners of the crest rail and the tops of the front legs. Today, twenty-four armchairs of this type remain at City Hall, all but two of them thought to have been made in Lannuier's shop. As the city grew in size, the number of Councilmen increased and chairs must have been supplied for additional council members. This pair represents an authentic reproduction of the original 1812 design made after Lannuier's death, most likely around 1830.
