Pair of Louis XV Style Carved Giltwood Arm Chairs circa 1860

About the Item

A good pair of Rococo Revival carved giltwood bergeres in the French Louis XV taste, they feature the intense rocaille motifs of the 18th century with beautifully detailed lobed shells in the crest and furling displays of acanthus foliage throughout the frames; the aprons are decorated with a loose interpretation of the shell that has embedded in the form opposing C-scrolls before flowing outward in leaves and vines while the knees are embellished with relief-carved displays of flowers over the beautifully molded cabriole legs that terminate in simple tapered sabots. They retain their original water gilded surfaces, these brilliantly burnished to create contrast while time and careful use has relieved the gold to show the underlying ruby-red bole and even the lower layers of white gesso for a chaotic and quite wonderful overall patina. We have left the chiars exactly as collected from the estate with an old (though obviously not original) covering that must be changed before they can be properly enjoyed. An incredibly comfortable pair with fine lines and gorgeous deep carvings, they are a delightful pair of chairs that make a room warm and inviting with their rich surfaces and timeless design. Measurements: 39 7/8" H x 27 3/4" W x 21" D x 18 1/2" H to seat Condition Report: Upholstery in poor condition (torn, faded, stained, generally tired) and must be changed; original surface with light chipping, abrasions, discolorations and rubbing through the gilding to reveal the red bole and lower layers of white gesso; the historical surfaces are gorgeous and remain overall vibrant and striking; both chairs are sturdy and very comfortable, each with tight joints and other than the upholstery are ready to be enjoyed.
