About the Item

Pair of René-Jean Caillette Lounge Chairs for Steiner, France, 1963 Elegant and timeless pair of lounge chairs designed by René-Jean Caillette for Steiner, France, 1963. Caillette was one of the leading figures of French post-war modernism, known for his refined sense of proportion, material harmony, and functional elegance. These armchairs express his architectural clarity and balanced design language — minimalist yet inviting. The chairs feature their original moss-green velour upholstery, preserved in good vintage condition with a warm, authentic patina. The frames rest on black lacquered steel sled bases, giving the pieces a floating appearance and strong graphic silhouette. While the fabric remains visually attractive, we recommend reupholstery for daily use to ensure optimal comfort and longevity. The structure is solid and sound, and the chairs can easily be reupholstered in a fabric of choice to match contemporary interiors. René-Jean Caillette (1919–2004) was part of the influential “Group 4” collective alongside Alain Richard, Geneviève Dangles, and Joseph-André Motte, defining the elegant, rational aesthetics of 1950s–60s French design. His collaboration with Steiner remains among the most collectible of the period.
