About the Item

Operating in São Paulo during the late 1960s and early 1970s, Indústria de Móveis Pailar was founded by Luiz Laufer, who also designed the company’s furniture. Located at 1087 Raul Pompeia Street, Pailar produced distinctive pieces, including this set of Slatted Lounge chairs, the sole known example of this design attributed to the company. Initially mistaken for a prototype of the Costela Chair by Martin Eisler, designed in 1953, our research suggests the Pailar Lounge Chair was created later, likely inspired by Eisler’s iconic design. To correct this long-standing misattribution, we acquired and incorporated this piece into our collection. Archival advertisements reveal that Pailar operated from 1966 to 1975, producing furniture that diverged from the era’s typical reliance on Rosewood. Instead, these chairs were crafted entirely from solid Gonçalo Alves wood, paired with slatted backrests. The chairs have been updated with new cushions, reupholstered in handwoven Bossa Fabrics in a Pine color, combining artisanal craftsmanship with their historical context. This Slatted Lounge chair is a significant piece of mid-century Brazilian furniture, reflecting the material choices and design sensibilities of its time. As the only known example of this design by Móveis Pailar, its inclusion in our collection ensures the recognition and preservation of its true origins.
