Pair of Vienna Secession Armchairs by Marcel Kammerer, Thonet No. 6534

About the Item

A wonderful pair of Vienna Secession stained and bent beechwood chairs, model no. 6534, designed by Marcel Kammerer and manufactured by Thonet, Vienna, Austria, circa 1910. With beautiful lines, a wonderful sense of proportion, and just a hint of the theatric, these armchairs offer a timeless comfort and style. The main feature of these armchairs is the dramatic, flared, continuous horseshoe-shaped back and arm rests, reminiscent of the iconic Josef Hoffmann "Buenos Aires" suite (J & J Kohn No. 675). The seat of curvilinear, trapezoidal shape, that follows the curve of the backrest. The chairs are framed and supported by straight, squared legs that surround a continuous stretcher. The armchairs of a stained, bent beechwood, typical of the Vienna Secession movement, meant to imitate mahogany, and upholstered in a neutral, patterned fabric. A stalwart of the Vienna Secession movement, Marcel Kammerer was a trained architect and a star pupil of Otto Wagner. After graduation, he joined Wagner's architectural firm, where he continued to work closely with Wagner, adopting and implementing many of his design theories. It was during this time that both Kammerer and Wagner developed bentwood furniture designs for Gebrüder Thonet.
