About the Item

A striking example of French modern design, this pair of vintage black cantilever patio chairs is attributed to François Carré, the celebrated early-20th-century designer known for his sculptural outdoor furniture. These chairs merge architectural elegance with practical comfort, showcasing the innovative use of metal and dynamic form that made Carré’s work iconic. The cantilevered frames create a sense of weightless suspension, allowing the seat to flex gently as you sit. Finished in a sophisticated matte black, the chairs balance industrial strength with sleek refinement, making them ideal for both garden settings and stylish interiors. Carré’s signature design influence is evident in the sculptural lines and airy silhouette. The black finish adds a contemporary edge, highlighting the chairs’ gentle curves and clean geometry. Whether used on a patio, terrace, or sunroom, they bring both modernist character and timeless appeal. Crafted for durability, these steel chairs are perfectly suited for outdoor use while maintaining a level of artistry that transcends typical patio furniture. Their cantilevered construction provides subtle movement, offering comfort without the need for cushions. This pair remains in excellent vintage condition, with a beautifully preserved finish and only minor wear consistent with age. The patina enhances their authenticity while preserving the integrity of their design. Perfect for collectors of French modernism or lovers of classic mid-century outdoor furnishings, these chairs embody the rare combination of sculptural elegance and everyday functionality. Whether placed poolside, on a city balcony, or indoors as statement side chairs, these François Carré–attributed cantilever chairs bring museum-quality design to your home or garden. Modernist Iron Strap Garden Armchairs Pair 1980s Salterini Style Brutalist MCM
By Russell Woodard, John Salterini, Mario Papperzini, Francois Carre, Herbert Saiger
Located in London, GB
A pair of gorgeous, impressive and rare Modernist iron strap vintage armchairs in wonderful, refinished condition. Likely made in the 1980s in continental Europe, these fabulously striking, assuredly robust and yet seductively sleek armchairs will add timeless sculptural elegance and bold sophistication to any outdoor setting. Impressively sized and reassuringly heavy, these stately armchairs are made of iron and due to their wide iron-strap seats and superbly sweeping backs are – rather surprisingly – extremely comfortable, even without a cushion! The gracefully flowing lines and over-curving back and arms are particularly stunning, and the large seats and broad backs make them the ideal statement garden chairs. Stylistically, the armchairs have an enhanced Post-Modernist 1980s assuredess to their more dainty design predecessors by Francoise Carré and Russell Woodard. Similar to Mario Papperzini for John Salterini and Herbert Saiger for Woodard’s more muscular 1970s iron strap chair...
