'Sea Anemone' Armchair by Pia Maria Raeder

About the Item

From simple beechwood rods, German artist Pia Maria Raeder creates refined functional sculptures reminiscent of biomorphic forms. She has become globally known for her ’Sea Anemone’ collection that reflects the beauty found on the ocean floor. Work by the artist is included in the permanent collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, France. Each the fruit of hundreds of working hours, her ‘Sea Anemone’ sculptures are handcrafted from thousands of beechwood rods that are cut, sanded and arranged one by one. More than 500 hours of work and 44,000 beech rods are necessary to produce this enveloping 'Sea Anemone' armchair with a light grey velvet upholstery. The application of white lacquer on the rods transforms the wood and underlines its movements. Emancipated from its limits, the wood hence transformed into undulating living forms is offered a newfound freedom. The breath of life seems to animate these organic creations, like the echo of a nature that is not imitated but is rather harnessed and experienced. Launched in 2016, the ‘Sea Anemone’ collection now includes twenty pieces, encompassing many typologies in which function and poetry fuse: side and coffee tables, wall and freestanding mirrors, armchairs, chandeliers, floor lamps and table lamps, vases.

    Located in Paris, FR
From simple beech rods that were patiently cut, sanded, arranged and lacquered, Pia Maria Raeder creates refined sculptures which evoke biomorphic forms. Each work is handcrafted by the artist. 2,000 beech rods were necessary to produce this 'Sea Anemone' sculpture. “In my work with beech rods, I love the challenge of overcoming the contradictions in the material as I play with it. Natural beech rods are straight, but combined at different heights, these rods take on a new form resembling a wave with shadowy reflections. A wooden rod, that is rigid in itself, becomes soft and rounded once sanded. The application of lacquer on the rods arranged in large numbers transforms the wood and underlines its movements.” Emancipated from its limits, the wood is offered a newfound freedom. The breath of...
