'Stardust' Bench Ensemble by Pia Maria Raeder

About the Item

Globally known for her ‘Sea Anemone’ series that reflects the beauty found on the ocean floor, German artist Pia Maria Raeder reveals with her new ‘Stardust’ collection a whole other dimension of her abstract vision of nature, further continuing her experimentations on biomorphic forms. Work by the artist is included in the permanent collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, France. According to Pia Maria’s own words: “Just like everyone I am fascinated by the scene of a starry sky. We all instinctively feel the magnetic attraction of these suns’ final splendors, as far as they may be. Living organisms are all made of this stardust that has crossed the universe for billions of years. With ‘Stardust’, I want to give my own interpretation of this natural phenomenon.” The sculptural ‘Stardust’ bench ensemble encompasses two benches of two seats each. The ensemble is made of 23,000 beechwood half pearls carved in eight different dimensions and patiently arranged one by one by the artist on two hand-carved benches. Comparable to a stellar landscape, the pearl structure then undergoes a custom silver-based metallization process during one week. This very technical last step based on this precious silver metal provides the highest level and the largest spectrum of light possible, conferring each creation its astonishing changing and shimmering reflections. In tune with the intangible spectrum of colors launched by a supernova in fusion, the color and sparkle of the silver coating varies in shade from brown to pink to golden, from blue to black to silvery depending on the light and on the angle it is viewed from. Emancipated from its limits, the wood transformed into undulating living forms is offered a newfound freedom. The breath of life seems to animate this organic creation, like the echo of a nature that is not imitated but is rather harnessed and experienced.

  • 'Sea Anemone' Sculpture by Pia Maria Raeder
    By Pia-Maria Raeder 1
    Located in Paris, FR
From simple beech rods that were patiently cut, sanded, arranged and lacquered, Pia Maria Raeder creates refined sculptures which evoke biomorphic forms. Each work is handcrafted by the artist. 2,000 beech rods were necessary to produce this 'Sea Anemone' sculpture. “In my work with beech rods, I love the challenge of overcoming the contradictions in the material as I play with it. Natural beech rods are straight, but combined at different heights, these rods take on a new form resembling a wave with shadowy reflections. A wooden rod, that is rigid in itself, becomes soft and rounded once sanded. The application of lacquer on the rods arranged in large numbers transforms the wood and underlines its movements.” Emancipated from its limits, the wood is offered a newfound freedom. The breath of...

Admani bench by Pendhapa Dimensions: D 126 x W 45 x H 42 cm Materials: Solid black javanese teak, Hand loom Silk Weight: 60 kg The vision behind our collaboration with Helena Bajaj Larsen is one of merging and honouring aesthetic and heritage standpoints hailing from diverse global perspectives. It is the coming together of an architectural design studio and a textile fashion studio. Our collaboration is anchored in space, touch and interaction and manifests itself through both its structural and spatial qualities. Our first piece is intended as a physical object that would bring people together - a point of convergence in a circulatory space: a bench fit for a few individuals to gather, converse, observe. We designed the bench as a central piece in the spirit of dissolving the boundaries between product and architecture, fabric and surface, object and space. Pendhapa Atelier is here acting as the creative engineer behind the structure of the product. Their design for the bench is conceived as “plateau” to support and showcase the artwork and craftsmanship present in the fabric by HBL. The plateau is divided by two asymmetric arcs making the experience of the bench different from each angle. The fabric is entirely hand-painted and is made of pure handloom Indian raw silk We are Atelier Pendhapa...
