Set of Four Louis XVI Gilt Chairs, Circa 1780

About the Item

A magnificent set of four gilt Louis XVI chairs, comprising of two armchairs and two side chairs, circa 1780. Of exceptional quality these chairs are hand-carved and finished in gilt laid over gesso. Beautifully proportioned, the arms end with a flourishing scroll and curve down onto a neoclassical pilar resting on combination dice, each side with a floral decoration. Running through the d-shaped belt, sides and back-rest is a fine and deep carving ,featuring a twirling laurel and oak leaf pattern, set off by four elegantly tapering column legs and carved ribbed finials. An identical set of four chairs was sold at Sothebys, 2017, from the collection Adele Livingston Stevens-Allen, Dimensions: Armchairs, height 91cm x width 58cm x depth 50cm. Side chairs, height 87cm x width 49cm x depth 42cm.     Undecipherable makers stamp to underside front rail.
