Set of Six Late 18th Century Bamboo ‘Cockpen’ Armchairs, with Drop in Seats

About the Item

A Set of Six Late 18th Century Bamboo ‘Cockpen’ Armchairs, with Drop in Upholstered Seats In the manner of Linnell, c.1770. Closely related in form to the Scottish ‘Cockpen’ chair, the spotted surface and faux bamboo design of these examples lends a freshness to their untouched surfaces. The drop in seats stripped to calico, with spandrels and gently raking backs. Extremely similar to a set of ten ‘neat bamboo chairs’ made for William Drake, Shardeloes in 1767. Provenance: Wood House, Essex (as pictured, Country Life fig.7)
