Set of Three Unique Easy Chairs Designed by Frits Schlegel, Denmark, 1949

About the Item

Set of three easy chairs designed by Frits Schlegel, Denmark, 1949. Textile upholstery and rosewood. Unique. Provenance: Designed for the Nyegaard Villa Strandvejen, Denmark. Elongated, wave-shaped front legs in solid rosewood characterise this set of extraordinarily comfortable yet elegant armchairs from 1949. The softly rounded wood is contrasted by a well-defined transition from leg to armrest. All three chairs are newly upholstered and in excellent condition. This is a noteworthy set of Scandinavian collectables — even more so when combined with the matching table. This distinctly modern set was designed by Frits Schlegel for the resistance fighter Erik Nyegaard's villa on Strandvejen in Copenhagen, a very exclusive road close to the seaside. Frits Schlegel trained as a mason and studied to become an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Frits Schlegel's oeuvre holds different projects; his furniture designs stand out as works of remarkable craftsmanship with a modern aesthetic. Easy chair designed by Hans Asplund for Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden 1955
By Hans Asplund
Located in Stockholm, SE
Easy chair designed by Hans Asplund for Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden, 1955. Walnut and leather. This rare easy chair, designed by Hans Asplund for Nordiska Kompaniet in 1955, exemplifies Swedish mid-century modern design. Custom-made for the beauty salon at NK’s flagship department store in Stockholm, only six chairs were made and never offered for retail sale. Asplund’s collaboration with NK often involved site-specific furniture, tailored to complement the interiors of the store or other commissioned spaces. This particular chair highlights Asplund’s focus on functionality and elegance, featuring the walnut frame with elegant, flowing curves that define its sophisticated design paired with cognac leather upholstery. Hans Asplund (1921–1994) was a prominent Swedish architect and designer, belonging to the renowned Asplund family of architects, which included his father, Gunnar Asplund, one of Sweden’s most celebrated architectural figures. Hans Asplund is best known for his contributions to Swedish modernism, blending functionality with elegance in both architecture and furniture design. Provenance Architect Hans Asplund (1921-1994). Thence by descent to his son, diplomat and UN ambassador Bo Asplund (1950-2024). Thence by descent to the present owner. Frits Henningsen Easy Chairs with Fluted Legs, Denmark, 1940s
By Frits Henningsen
Located in Utrecht, NL
‘Danish master cabinetmaker’ or “snedkermester” has become a commonly used term for Danish furniture makers, even though the expression is quite exclusive and only applies to certain craftsmen. Frits Henningsen is justly one of the most renowned master cabinetmakers, with this pair of easy chairs illustrating why. The typical elements of Danish modern furniture, the straight lines, the clear design, had developed with time, starting on the long path from the historical style that was still predominant in the 1920s. Architect and furniture maker, Frits Henningsen had a significant role in paving this path. As an active member of the Cabinetmakers Guild from 1927, he was admired by his peers for the high quality of his craftsmanship. The shape of this chair model shows Henningsen’s opposition to the younger designers in the 1940s who preferred strictly straight lines. Henningsen on the other hand, believed furniture design needed to maintain curvature which contributed to a homely look. These easy chairs were designed in this period and feature the uncompromising designer’s personal...
