Superb Satinwood and Hand Painted Chinoiserie Cockpen Armchair c. 1900
About the Item
On behalf of a gentleman collector, a most beautiful and capacious satinwood Thomas Chippendale design cockpen armchair. The whole with hand painted lacquer work panels of chinoiserie design of a courting couple in a Chinese garden, doves, flowers and foliage against cinnabar red and carbon black pigments with green and white pastels. The front legs and seat rails beautifully carved with blind fretwork, interspersed with further finely painted panels and with well shaped hand carved spandels at each hip.
Made by hand in c. 1900 and in excellent original condition with only a few tiny and superficial marks consistent with age and use, the chair is very sturdy, heavy and solid.
The cane work is perfect throughout. The seat pad appears to be the original - made for the chair and covered in a thick plum coloured velvet with soft feather filled padding over a fitted baseboard and with a short tasselled braid finish. The velvet seat pad with some wear and shadowing to the nap which compliments and looks entirely right on this antique chair.
The chair is and rock solid. The cane work is perfect throughout.
Extremely comfortable with a supportive back, wide and deep seat and the arms at a very good height and width also.
The chair was acquired from a reputable BADA dealer for a substantially higher sum.
A really beautiful chair and a faithful and fine quality copy of an 18th century cockpen chair of Chippendale design.
This will work as a desk or library chair and give good service for centuries to come.
