About the Item

The term Swedish Modern was quickly established as a reinterpretation of modernity during the 1940s, and in the new style, early and square functionalism was replaced by a freer and more artistic ideal. Swedish Modern is an inheritance coming from a rich tradition of beauty loving people who are courageous enough to break away from the swaddling clothes of the past to entertain new forms for living. These armchairs have a very precise, defined outline, emphasized by the line tufting that sections them visually. Vertical tufting was essential in Art Deco. These armchairs’ design evidently drew inspiration from the early 20th century movement, combining it with more modern elements such as the tapered wood legs and an earthly colour palette. There is therefore a great balance regarding the design, which is achieved through the clever use of the materials, and the straight and rounded edges of the upholstered body and legs. Like the cosy shape, the upholstery is tight, and impeccably done, exuding warmth and the Swedish cosiness we tend to seek for our homes. The curving backs and armrests are welcoming, and unmistakeable of the era’s design in Sweden. The shell bodies embrace the sitter comfortably, while the low seats and thick cushions guarantee comfort. The tapered legs complement the design by their simplicity. The modern design movement made the Swedish form widely known and this second generation of 'functionalists' affirmed craftsmanship, tradition, and history. The new style, in which these armchairs were also created, signalled both status, unassuming and sensitive awareness right up to the 1960s. This pair of armchairs illustrates how successful the Swedish Modern style was at preserving and building on traditional design ideals and crafts to create modernist furniture. With a classic look, storied design and solid quality, these armchairs are truly soulful and timeless. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with use.
