Two Rene Gabriel Armchairs

About the Item

Two different models of this armchair where originally produced. The only difference is in the type of joint used in the front of the seat of the armchair ( one was a "finger" joint and the other a butt joint). The two armchairs available are examples of both models. René Gabriel (1890-1950) designed wallpaper, fabrics, rugs, ceramics and theatrical sets as well as furniture. In 1920 he opened a small wallpaper store called Au Sansonnet on the rue de Solferino in Paris and in 1934, Ateliers d’Art in Neuilly. By 1927 he was exhibiting very simple oak furniture with graceful lines and participating in the major Paris expositions. In 1937 his interest in the small production of inexpensive quality furniture resulted in “Elements RG” featuring tubular metal bases and components that could be used in multiple combinations. After World War II, France was faced with a monumental task of rebuilding 15 million housing units. A government program of reconstruction was started in 1948 and a way of living that was revolutionary in 1925 was accepted by the post-war generation. New, affordable, smaller and practical living spaces demanded functional furniture of good design that could be reduced to elements suitable for manufacture. The Avant Garde design community was given the assignment of making a reality of theory on a scale they had never before attempted. They would need to show that serial production and quality were not contradictions. Servant-less homes and urban density required functional, rational interiors. New homes were designed with flexible open plans and multi-use spaces. The kitchens were open to the dining areas so the hostess could participate in the conversation and prepare dinner at the same time. The dining and living rooms were now indicated by function with flexible furniture arrangements. Bathrooms and kitchens were small and organized for maximum efficiency. These post-war years were Gabriel’s most productive. He created pieces whose line and proportion were easily integrated into contemporary architecture. René Gabriel was in the forefront of the modernist movement as an intellectual and practicing innovator. He was a member and president of the Societé des Artistes Decorateurs, a teacher and a director of the Ecole Nationale Superieure, and took part in establish the René Gabriel Prize for young designers. He showed work at the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Moderns, the Salon d’Automne and yearly at the Societé des Artistes Decorateurs. He was gifted with creativity and vision and he was sensitive to the way cultural change made an impact on material life. His achievement was an important generous contribution to an extraordinary period in the history of decorative arts.
