About the Item
Gracefully proportioned and sculptural in silhouette, this vintage Chinese horseshoe back armchair draws on centuries of tradition while offering a quiet, natural presence. The continuous crest rail flows in a sweeping arc, curving into rounded arms that rest on delicately shaped supports. At the center, a slightly concave back splat features pierced scrollwork at the shoulders and a stylized medallion carved in low relief—details that soften the geometry without interrupting the fluidity of line.
The seat is inset within a molded frame and raised on square legs joined by stretcher bars, with a shaped apron carved in gentle undulations along each side. Rendered in natural wood with a light-toned finish that highlights the grain, the chair brings warmth and visual texture without distraction.
This refined armchair balances elegance and restraint. It would make a striking accent in a study, entryway, or seating arrangement, especially in interiors that favor natural materials, sculptural silhouettes, or a blend of classical and modern sensibilities.

Antique 18th Century Chinese Yoke-Back Armchair in Lacquered Pearwood.
A stunning antique Chinese yoke-back armchair from the 18th century. A remarkable design - quintessentially Chinese and of monumental proportions. Should have been a chair for someone important. The design rooted in the Ming-style from several hundred years before this chair was created - showing straight and strict proportions combined with sculptural and flowing shapes all hand carved from solid wood. Remarkable to see a chair this 'boxy' could be so sculptural and dynamic in appearance. Also, this chair is quite comfortable to sit in.

Chairs with arms were more honorific than those without and both kinds were for men - women sat on stools. The design of these antique Chinese chairs...
