BoD02 walnut armchair commode 22.5 x 24 x 37 H, seat 19” France, circa 1870. $495.00. This is a handsome walnut armchair, gently scrolled at the back, with sabre legs and full-length arms whose sweeping curve ends with a bold scrolled hand rest. With a seat height of 19” it makes for comfortable sitting, either at the table or in a corner of the room. The seat lifts to a pine insert and an enamel pail. This reveals the other purpose of this throne-like armchair; it is a “commode”, often called a “potty chair”. The pail, we are almost pleased to say, is not original. It is old, of very high quality enamel, and, with the pine insert notched to accommodate its handle, is an excellent fit. It cannot be removed through the hinged front door, as the original chamber pot would have been, but must be lifted out by its iron handle. This chair reminds us of the creativity of our predecessors, but it need not be a mere curiosity. Products with the same purpose are made today, of plastic and aluminium, and are often necessary to the sick, the frail, and the elderly.
