18th Century English Barley Twist Bench

About the Item

English Mid Century Modern wooden bench from the 18th century with barley twist base and white boucle upholstery. This classy, barley twist wooden bench oozes timeless elegance. This piece is characterized by its base which is not only for supporting the structure, but creates a beautiful aesthetic. The twists create a flow throughout the piece and your eyes are drawn to, through, and around the spirals. The bench has six sturdy legs, which are connected through a double H-form cross stretcher, showing masterful joinery of the craftsmanship used in 18th century England. The fabric, that was recently upholstered, is soft and plush to the touch. The boucle fabric has a knotty, loopy texture and is made from wool and cotton fibers; the word itself means to curl. It is unique, thanks to the irregular, curly threads of yarn it is woven from. This fabric was chosen for its soft, cozy feeling. The white color contrasts and compliments well with the brown toned, dark amber wood. Before taking out the old springs and fabric, we noticed that the original insides were made of horsehair! Touching the hair of a horse that is over three hundred years old reminds you of the changing times, and how craftsmanship goes beyond the creator and leaves an impression. A nostalgia for a time before our own. It is pictured above the before and after. With rich history and timeless style, this piece has a story to tell and is the spark to your next conversation.
