19th Century French Hand Made Bentwood Walnut Bench with Fruitwood Inlay

About the Item

This striking 19th century French walnut bentwood bench, which seats three, offers both historical significance and timeless craftsmanship. Featuring elegant fruitwood inlay along the seat and backrest, this bench is a superb example of bentwood furniture, a technique that was highly popular during the 19th century. The method involves steaming wood and bending it into shape, creating fluid, graceful curves, a hallmark of the period’s design. The bench is particularly notable for its original brass plaque, which reads "FABRICATION DES BRASSERIES DE CHAMPIGNEULLES (M. & M.)," indicating that it was crafted for or by the Brasserie Champineulles, located in the Grand Est region, a newly created region formed by the merger of Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne, and Lorraine. The "(M. & M.)" likely refers to the initials of the brewery's owners or manufacturers at the time. Built in 1897, Brasserie Champigneulles is the oldest brewery in France, making this piece not only a functional object but also a rare piece of industrial history. It is likely that this bench was once part of the brewery's furnishings, offering a glimpse into the daily life of a historical French brewery. According to the legend of St. Arnold, patron saint of Lorraine’s brewers, around the year 640, thirsty pilgrims transporting his relic discovered barrels filled with cervoise or barley beer right on the site where Brasserie Champigneulles stands. Well established, it has a long-standing reputation. It was Tour de France’s official sponsor during the 1950s and 1960s, and sponsor of the 1968 Olympic Games. It remains a prized and renowned local beer. The bench’s patina is beautifully aged, with the rich walnut showing a deep, warm glow that only comes with time and use. The brass plaque further enhances its charm, serving as a maker's mark and adding to the collectible value of the piece. The natural wear on the wood and the intricate inlay work speak to its authenticity and enduring beauty, making this bench a unique and evocative addition to any collection.
