About the Item

Cubic Lines Bench by Atelier V&F Limited Edition Of 20+2AP Pieces. Dimensions: D 63 x W 226 x H 33 cm. Materials: Oak. Cubic Pillar, Blocks, and Lines is a continuation of our exploration on the nature of design. Stripped off any externally imposed aesthetical meaning, this collection embraces the basic geometric structure, hiding the functionality under the disguise of its form. Four lines diagonally crossing one another make up a two-dimensional cube. When added with another dimension, it gains volume. These simple structures of lines and curves assume the archetype of stillness and dynamics of objects in space. The cubic pillar is a closet that hides its doors on the side, and the square block on bars a table that camouflaged its drawers. Completed with the long curvy blocks as benches, this collection takes on a good sense of humor which is understated and self-expressive. It is an experiment that explores the expressiveness of basic elements in bringing out the temperament and character of a work. The very abstractness offers the viewers of the work a doorway to his or her own imagination and poetry. Atelier V&F was co-founded by Chen Furong and Vega Zaishi Wang in Shenzhen. Chen Furong graduated from the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts, majoring in comprehensive design. And he started the design studios WUU and CHEN FURONG Studio. Vega Zaishi Wang graduated from the London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martin and founded the designer brand VEGA ZAISHI WANG. The designers’ professional background and artistic upbringing become the intrinsic character of Atelier V&F. Their expertise, professional knowledge, and years of experience in the design field are the fertile ground for the development and exploration of Atelier V&F that enable it to break the divide of territories and cultures, and with an inclusive narrative to interpret aesthetics and functionality. The two designers’ poetics of life and living, their respect for different materials’ true nature, and their unceasing pursuit of exquisite craftsmanship instill vitality into Atelier V&F’s works from artistic sculptures, installments, and space to practical and utilitarian objects. Vega’s intuitive riding on fashion’s romantic urge and flow and Furong’s philosophical perspective on practical design is combined in one artistic expression, making their works both detailedly practical and ceremonial. As a married couple, the duo instills powerful emotional strength to the work of Atelier V&F, trying to interpret and represent the non-utilitarian and simple beauty in a coldly rational and precise world.

Jerry Three Places Bench by Stephane Duccateau, France, 2007
By Stephane Ducatteau
Located in London, GB
Jerry three places bench by Stephane Duccateau, France, 2007. Don't be put off about the thought of sitting on a steel chair - this is perfectly proportioned and very comfortable. All Ducatteau pieces are available exclusively from Decoratum and are To Order only. Lead time 6 - 8 weeks plus delivery. Exchange rate fluctuations may apply. Stéphane Duccateau. Ducatteau is an artist and creator of contemporary furniture working primarily with sheet metal. Although his furniture is about the aesthetic, he never forgets the functional aspects of his pieces. His approach is sculptural, using a pleasurable mix of ergonomics and curves to generate an emotional, almost sensual response in the viewer. The metals Ducatteau uses, take on an almost ebony-like effect thanks to the well-worked patinas that he produces, often treating the metal with acids or minerals; each piece is produced to the same rigorous standards that you would expect from someone with the skills of a wrought iron metal worker combined with the impossibly high standards of an artist. Ducatteau’s background is not what you would expect from an artist, having initially studied engineering. However, over the course of several years he attended evening classes in Paris studying fine arts (drawing, painting, modelling, glasswork, etc) before obtaining a degree in Art Metalwork. After working as an engineer in an architect’s office, he made the decision to devote a full year to further training in the art of metalwork as he no longer wished to merely be a disassociated part of the design process; rather he wanted to be the process, involving himself in the entire project from concept to design to final realisation of the object. His work has developed over time, moving from a more decorative style to simpler creations where he has distilled the very basic essence of design into deceptively pure, functional works of art. A recurring device or theme of his work method is the accumulation or repetition of relatively basic elements whose very repetition creates a rhythm which provides direction for his creativity processes. Ducatteau worked for several years in Roubaix in northern France out of a collective workshop before settling in Normandy in 2003. He has a number of exhibitions and fairs under his belt as can be seen below. Exhibitions Sept/Oct 2009 TALENTS, SHOW-ROOM. May/July 2009 GALERIE EMEURAUDE, Le Touquet. June 2008 VIA, Paris (exposition des LABELS VIA 2008). April 2008 VIA, Milan (exposition des LABELS VIA 2008). Nov 2007 GALERIE LE FEUVRE, séries limitées, Paris.
