About the Item

A masterfully carved studio-crafted two-seater bench in richly figured claro black walnut, designed and fabricated by Dave Hentzel—an accomplished American craftsman. Inspired by the legendary work of Sam Maloof, this bench reflects the spirit of Maloof’s legendary design language while standing firmly in its own identity, with fluid lines, impeccable joinery, and a sculptural presence that speaks to Hentzel’s deep understanding of form and material. The contoured spindle back is both architectural and organic, flowing seamlessly into the arms and seat. Each spindle is individually shaped to create a rhythmic visual cadence, while the hand-carved walnut showcases stunning depth and grain variation. The bench is a celebration of American studio craft—timeless, tactile, and deeply expressive. Hentzel is no longer producing commissioned studio furniture, making this piece a rare opportunity to own a work by a maker whose legacy is rooted in one of the most revered traditions of American woodworking. Signed and dated to underside. A complementary armchair in matching claro walnut and sculptural form is available separately.
