About the Item

A circa 1780 English oak settle or bench of stately carved details. With a finely paneled back of grand proportions–long enough to comfortably seat three or four people–this lovely settle is framed by graceful arms shaped and thoughtfully cut away as an inviting and comfortable feature. A squab–or bench cushion–upholstered in soft green and ivory foliate pattern rests on railroaded wood stretchers for support. The seat filling is densely packed with natural fibers of uncertain equine (horse hair) or vegetal origin. Note that the fabric is in poor condition with stains and discoloration. Elevating the whole are three turned and tapering pad-footed front legs, quite thick, and three squared back legs to sit flush against a wall. The wood frame has been cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to reveal every historic character. Please view the detailed images.
