About the Item

It's inspired by the capital of an Ionic column. Instead of the look of dense stone, I wanted to extract the lines of the form to create a light, spacious and resilient bench in which a person sits in the middle framed on either side by two big luxurious scrolls. The lines of the Baltic birchwood plies evoke a feeling of movement and vibrancy. The surfaces that reveal the plies are finely sanded, and coated with a high-quality Italian acrylic; the result is a seat that is sensuously smooth to the touch. This beautiful, strong and highly functional seat is perfect for an entry foyer, or at the foot of the bed, with the scrolls used for storage. The first bench produced is currently in a travelling museum collection entitled the 'Art of Seating' 200 years of American Design. Designed in 2010. Made-to-order in New York City. Require a 50% deposit and then the remainder to be paid prior to shipping. Lead time approximately 8-10 weeks.

Christine Kalia is a design studio exploring modes of spatial relations between architectural, interior and product design. The studio’s vision is calibrated towards ecocentric design and contemporary aesthetics; where the end products manifest the prime materials. The various collections take different approaches to this design mode, often seen as sitting in-between reality and daydreaming. The “coming from” of each design’s unique materiality is carefully crafted towards a “belonging with”, where the sophisticated design of the studio’s products is complementing any environment, in order to elevate its aesthetic aura.
