About the Item

Designed by José Zanine Caldas in the 1950s, this solid bench features simple, elegant lines that seamlessly blend modern design with traditional craftsmanship. Sculpted from a single piece of wood, this piece is part of Zanine Caldas’ Móveis Denúncia, or “protest furniture”—a series of works created in response to the deforestation of the forests surrounding his native Brazil. The seat and back are hand-carved from one continuous slab of wood, which appears to float atop its cross-shaped legs. Its elegant design, combined with the profound environmental message it conveys, makes this bench more than just a piece of furniture—it becomes a symbol of connection, both between people and the natural world.
