Klaus Grabe Corded 2-Seat Bench

About the Item

USA, ca. 1950s. An unusual 2-seat bench attributed to Klaus Grabe for Robert Kayton Associates - produced by the Kingston Manufacturing Company of Kingston, NY. Featuring an angular modular design executed in solid birch with tapered legs and cantilevered arms. Original green vinyl coated cord seats and backs demonstrate a clever post-war use of industrial material. Would be perfectly at home in a sunroom, hallway, or office. Lightly refurbished to preserve patina - and in overall very good vintage condition. Klaus Grabe (German, active Mexico and US, 1910-2004) trained at the Bauhaus and left Germany in the 1930s. In Mexico, he worked with fellow Bauhaus student Michael van Beuren and Morley Webb to establish the Domus company. Part of MoMA’s 1941 Organic Design in Home Furnishings Competition, their leather-webbed chaise became a winning entry. Grabe would eventually move to New York, where his designs for prefabricated plywood kit furniture helped introduce modern forms to the American consumer. Dimensions: 43.75” long x 21” deep x 28” high; 17.5” seat height.
