About the Item

Late 18th Century Georgian Elm Settle. Designed to avoid the wintry drafts. Decorative shaped ends with a curved and paneled back over a thick elm seat on sledge feet. Typically used in an entrance hall or beside an "Ingle Nook Fireplace". Made in England circa 1790. 58" H 48" W 21" D A superb example of late 18th century English vernacular design, this Georgian period high back settle was crafted in England circa 1790. Made from solid elm, the piece boasts a warm, timeworn patina and a richly figured grain that speaks to its age and authenticity! The tall, paneled back is gently curved and enclosed by shaped winged sides- originally intended to provide warmth and protection from drafts when placed near a hearth. The seat is hand-carved from a single thick board, its front edge elegantly scalloped in a natural, undulating line. Slab sides with integral armrests support the form, terminating in primitive shoe feet and joined with pegged construction. A rare and evocative settle with immense character and a beautiful balance between utility and sculptural presence, this piece offers both historical significance and visual impact. It would serve as a striking statement in a country kitchen, hallway, or entryway- equally suited to traditional and modern rustic interiors.
