Mattia Biagi, "One Wink for Yes", Bench
About the Item
This sculptural bench from Mattia Biagi's Metropolitan Sets series expresses the personal investigation of the artist straddling life and death, nature and civilization, preservation and transformation. The images used to build the bodies of the pieces are references emerging from a lifetime of photographic clippings accumulated in the midst of magazines, pornography, art history, and personal photos.
After having been directly printed on wood with a multi layered ink process, the images are cutout and assembled onto a Classic furniture form. This anthology of memories, visions and experiences allows Biagi to draw directly from his subconscious to create a three-dimensional statuary collage.

The dynamics of transformation is a driving concept and process behind Biagi’s work, in particular, the transformative power of coating everyday objects with layers of viscous tar. With his series of round paintings, the transformative power of tar is explored on its own terms, as the singular materiality of painting. While on one level the minimal yet richly textured tar forms conjure dark themes like voids or black holes, they simultaneously invoke the opposite, their perfect geometric circularity referencing solid presence, totality, and completion.
Mattia Biagi was born in northern Italy in 1974 and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. After working under the tutelage of Giulio Cappellini for 11 years, Biagi departed for Los Angeles to launch his career. During a chance encounter with some black tar oozing from the ground at the La Brea Tar Pits...

Bronze Sculptural Panama Chair, 21st Century by Mattia Biagi
By Mattia Biagi
Located in Culver City, CA
"Panama Bronze" is an art and design project, the result of the collaboration between the artist Mattia Biagi and Promemoria. The artist has poured hot tar on a real Panama chair, to bring the object closer to the material and to make it melt in the ground. Mattia Biagi has created what he himself called the "polarity of destruction and conservation".
"Although the melted tar destroys the object it touches, in this case, the Panama chair - an elegant and finely crafted object - it simultaneously preserves it in its new and very different form". This is how the original silhouette of the Panama chair was turned into its new incarnation.
Thanks to its experience in working with bronze, Promemoria has helped Mattia to refine his work of art, transforming the iconic Panama chair, designed by Romeo...
