Notch II

About the Item

Notch II is a 16-inch tall bench. The clean and simple benchtop plays off the jagged legs. The Notch collection finds its foundation in ‘cribbage’, a rough-cut lumber used to build support structures called ‘cribs’ in coal mines. This material which would otherwise go to waste, is recycled, hand-cut, and charred to create the pedestal base at the root of this collection. A visual connection is easily made between the harsh and sporadic dark forms and the raw minerals drawn from the earth.

Bench II by Donatas Zukauskas
By Donatas Žukauskas

Bench II by Kasanai Dimensions: D 85 x W 32 x H 43 cm. Materials: Oak, cement, recycled paper, glue, paint. 7 kg. The visual inspiration for the bench is a combination of natural wood and concrete. These two opposite materials combined, create a unique character of the product that has the coldness of concrete and the coziness of wood. The tabletop is made of natural oak, and the base of the table, resembling concrete in appearance, is made by pouring solid mass. The set task was technologically challenging - it was necessary to fuse wet mass and moisture-sensitive wood. The entire structure of the table is manufactured at the same time, so that the two materials join together smoothly and precisely to avoid any gaps. After the product dries, it is scrubbed, and the tabletop is oiled. The black concrete-like material is the result of various experiments. It is a mixture of several components: an eco-friendly of cement, recycled paper, glue, and paint. Dried it becomes as strong as wood, it resembles concrete but is slightly elastic, so it does not split or crumble. The result is a natural texture and strength that ensures durability. Biche Bench II, USA, 2022
By Alex Roskin
Located in New York, NY
Todd Merrill Studio has been the exclusive representative of Alex Roskin since 2017. Roskin’s works blend functional design with modernist sculptural references. A natural successor of innovative artists such as Richard Serra, Jean Arp, and Constantin Brancusi, Roskin’s cast bronze, stainless steel, and carved wood works reflects the artist’s modernist and primitive influences. Beginning with a series of quick sketches, Roskin captures the movement of a basic form. By sculpting in foam and wood, Roskin translates that movement into a structural model that is then 3D scanned so that it can then be cast in bronze, aluminum or steel, and finished with carved wood elements. His works often feature a mammalian physicality with heaving sinuous forms and legs that extend from the body in a bowed fashion. Rejecting outright anthropomorphic mimicry in favor of subtle, sculpted muscular forms, Roskin notes: “I try with each piece to create a stance and a presence, some with more contrapposto. I aim to give each piece a feeling it is inhaling or ready to make a move...
