Original Charleston Battery Bench Cast Iron & Painted Cypress, 6 ft. double size

About the Item

This is the original Charleston Battery Bench with heaviest weight cast iron sides made from the 19th century original pattern and durable South Carolina cypress slats. It is hand painted in our dip tank (not thinly spray-painted) with the best quality exterior alkyd enamel in the traditional Charleston dark green color, 6 feet (72") long. Originally made circa 1880 to beautify Charleston's historic Battery waterfront after the Civil War, the Riley Ironworks were commissioned by the city to create a design reminiscent of features in Charleston. The casting boasts a fox on its arm indicating the hunting and sporting life so prominent in the SC Lowcountry. There is a greyhound which is indicative of the dog races which occurred on the north end of the peninsula; the SC Lowcountry parakeet is displayed and now extinct and there is a "stylized" palmetto frond above the Victorian style legs. Please note the "BIRLANT" name in the casting which denotes an original Charleston Battery Bench. Other sizes available: 30" single bench, 48" two-seat bench and a 96" double size, four-seat bench, priced accordingly on 1st Dibs. Many images of our bench located on Charleston's famous historic Battery (White Point Gardens on the Battery). Made for Outdoor or indoor use and weighs in excess of 110 lbs. and shipped unassembled via UPS and easy to assemble. Replacement slats are always available by special order from our website to replace aging slats. We recommend re-painting our bench in the best quality exterior gloss Industrial enamel every 3-5 years to maintain the longevity of the bench and the slats. No bench of this historical significance or authenticity is made today in the US. Other benches that are similar in size start at $1,500 and up, but as we are the manufacturer, we supply them to the general public at "wholesale". Typically, benches are shipped within 2-3 weeks. PLAN EARLY FOR SEASONAL GIVING!! (Shipping charges shown are per EACH bench).
