Pair of French 19th Century Renaissance Style Patinated Dark Oak Benches

About the Item

An extremely handsome and most impressive pair of French 19th century Renaissance st. patinated dark oak benches, circa 1870. Each bench is raised by fine scrolled feet below the straight frieze with a superb carved foliate band. At the center of the base are exceptionally carved central reserves of elegant maidens draped in classical fabrics and holding flowers. Each are framed within large scrolled movements and flanked by outstanding mermaids and female masks set on crests with swaging floral garlands at each side. The sides display recessed panels centered by the original wrought iron handles. The seats lift up to reveal large concealed storage compartments and display finely carved palmette designed borders. The impressive arms are decorated with fabulous richly carved scrolled designs and fine family shields. The back supports display exceptional and intricately carved central reserves of the beautiful Diana the Huntress draped in flowing fabrics with charming dogs and holding arrows. Diana is centered by large seashell cabochons and striking carved recessed reserves to each side. Above are most decorative fluted bands and fine interlocking floral carvings extending along the tops. All original warm patina throughout.
