About the Item

A charming metamorphic pair of benches that go together to form a single table typical of the Victorian era. English, Circa 1860, these benches were originally used at pews or school tables within churches. The dark pitch pine bench sits on a sturdy cast iron frame which allows the bench to flip forward to create a suitable writing table top. Moulded into the cast iron frame is the makers names of Sidebotham & Co Patentees" to one side, with “National Desk” and Blackfriars St. Manchester” to the reverse. A wonderful pair of Victorian gothic metamorphic chapel benches or school benches. This particular pair had been in situ since 1860 until recently being discovered in a school in the South East of England. Each bench can be converted into either a table or a bench with an upright back support. When the two benches are placed together they can create a double table with enough space to comfortably seat eight people per bench. The pair of benches would make a great addition to any restaurant or commercial setting, even better as a residential statement as a guest table or for a seating arrangement in a dining room or kitchen. The seats and backrests, made of pitch pine wonderfully complimented by the industrial influence of the cast iron frame, are in excellent condition with superb patination making these aesthetically pleasing wherever they may land.
