About the Item
A simple, meditative form for clean living and clear thinking. The tea bench is humble, yet sophisticated with wedged through tenons, a hand shaved stretcher joining the legs, and a subtle under bevel on the seat.
It is made from carefully chosen, sustainably sourced wood; each board selected for its clarity and straightness of grain. The select lumber is milled with machines, then the joinery cut by hand. With everything tightly fit, each piece is given a polish with well sharpened planes and spokeshaves that provide a sheen unattainable by sandpaper. Finished with a natural oil and wax blend.

West of Noble is a Los Angeles based design practice dedicated to the pursuit of making wooden furniture by hand. It was founded by designer and itinerant woodworker Greg Mitchell in Greenpoint, Brooklyn in 2011, but is inspired by a lifetime of travel, time spent on the sea, various odd jobs, wooden sailboats, and friends and family; without whom the company would not exist. Our designs are guided by the making process, and the unpredictable nature of our chosen material. We aim for the simplest line in each piece, believing it is only finished when there is nothing left to take away.

Originally created to pair with our Himes Table, the Himes Bench explores the principals of tension and compression. Each of the six parts that make up this piece fit into one and other and are held together using these forces of strength and stability. This bench features a through tenon connection between its legs and top creating a stunning contrast in grain and a clean design detail. Additionally a subtle angled cut adds interest to and comfort to the bench seat. Customized lengths available.
We work with North American solid hardwoods on a made-to-order fabrication basis. The images and pricing above illustrate our use of flat cut white ash in a variety of stains. Additional offerings in white oak, dark oak, walnut & hard maple are available, with different finish oils & stains at our disposal.
