An Unusually Late Regency Period Mahogany Bench

About the Item

In the manner of Charles Heathcote Tatham. This window seat, elegantly framed and panelled with a reeded frieze, rests upon reeded legs adorned with finely carved paterae. Its impressive size, nearly five and a half feet long sets it apart, and its remarkable preservation ensures that its original colour and patina remain gloriously intact. Hall benches like this one were once ubiquitous in grand country houses, lining the galleries and halls. They provided seating for guests, allowing them to admire the surroundings or wait for an audience with the home's lord, duke, or other esteemed host. Today, these benches serve a variety of functions, whether placed at the foot of a bed, in a hallway, or as a statement piece in any room.
