About the Item

This finely and profusely carved chair originates from the Rococo Revival period, an era of original applications of the motifs of a century prior. Particularly in France the furnishings borrowed heavily from the Louis XV motifs of the mid 18th Century while also introducing many of the motifs more commonly found in English Chippendale furnishings of the era - the sharp C-scrolls, round medallions surrounded by rocaille carvings, and deep and vivid furls of acanthus all are only reminiscent of the prior forms. This example is just a gorgeous canvas under the hand of an artist, the frame with unique and somewhat liberated carving throughout - the edges of the molded chair back have crisply executed oak leaves falling from the frame, the inner corners with a mix of scrolling acanthus and a single round flower, both flanking the bold and imaginative rocaille central motif at the crest. Similar carvings, though certainly uniquely interpreted for each component, gently adorn the handholds and apron over the cabriole legs that terminate in bold scrolling French toes. The fabric remains in overall "very good" condition, certainly not new but does seem to have only been gently used. The chair is an absolute statement piece of fine comfortable proportions, remaining in an outstanding state of preservation throughout. This is a piece that was crafted to last many lifetimes and will certainly be a cherished part of any classical interior. Measurements: 31" W x 43 1/4" H x 26 1/2" D, 20" H to seat Condition Report: Upholstery in very good condition with no observable flaws. Light surface wear, dings, abrasions and minor chips to carvings as expected. Very sturdy and comfortable - overall excellent condition.
