About the Item

With marks. They need restoration. Pair of high-backed armchairs with armrests made of gilded carved wood that have an upholstery in light tones of plant elements accompanied by vases and architectural details of classicist influence. The forms of the furniture, both practically identical, recall in their curves and their softness (in the carved areas) the French examples of the 19th century that follow the Louis XVI style (Louis XVI seats, in France, begin around 1770, reign of Louis XV, and they will last until the 19th century, especially in provinces far from the main creative centers). Typologically, they belong to the class called in French "bergère", armchair with upholstered sides and loose cushion, in addition to having "ears". The upholstery is divided in the backrest by two bands of giltwood, material that appears in the lower part of the armchair, edge of the backrest, arms, etc. the legs have a grooved stipe shape, finished in a circular shape carved with vegetal garland, closely resembling French specimens of neoclassical influence. Note that the influence of French furniture, in the 19th century, is present throughout Europe. In the lower part you can see a very clear mark: "126 / (crown) / ER / VII". It was very usual to mark the best examples of furniture both in France (mandatory after the promulgation in 1753) and in the rest of Europe (where according to the area was more or less frequent) to ensure the origin of the piece and that it has passed a series of quality controls, although a few cases are known in which the marks would surely be related to an owner or an important collection.
