Pair of Carved Rope and Tassel Barrel Bergère Chairs in Bouclé Fabric

About the Item

Pair of bergère armchairs, in the manner of AME Fournier (French, active after 1850), having a painted finish showing natural wear, each frame of wood carved to resemble rope, with knots on arms, and above each tassel foot, upholstered rounded back and serpentine crown seat, newly upholstered, finished with nailheads. The illusion of twisted and knotted rope is often associated with the work of the Parisian upholsterer A. M. E. Fournier, who worked at the Boulevard Beaumarchais, from 1850 onwards.
