Fine French Louis XVI Style Antique Painted Canapé Settee, 19th Century

About the Item

A truly delightful piece, the surface of this canape is skillfully carved throughout the frame. The crest features a bow of twisted ribbon tying the laurel bay leaves together, these flowing outward in large blades into the twisted "infinity" molding of full three-dimensions edged by repeating beading. Large acanthus foliage furls over the shoulders of the frame, this same serrated leafage employed in the arm supports, the handholds and the stiles behind the seat. A relatively new upholstery in "excellent" condition covers the canape, stuffed over the rail and accompanied by a pair of pillows. It rests over six turned and tapered legs with bay leaves encircling the top over rather unique stop-fluting with a torchiere capping the stop. They terminate over plain ball feet. This carefully and entirely hand carved piece is a work of art, crafted to last the test of time and as functional as it is beautiful. It is a canape that elevates a sitting room with it's depth of craftsmanship and brightens an interior with it's handsomely worn surface. Measurements: 70 1/4" wide x approximately 32" deep x 39" high; 17-18" high to seat; seat is 25" deep from front edge to back Condition Report: Upholstery in "excellent" condition with no observed flaws. Right leg and right arm support with old cracks along the grain from natural shrinkage. Surface wear as expected, traces of earlier paint visible. Very sturdy and strong in all joints, comfortable.
