French Louis XVI Style Carved Giltwood Antique Canape Settee Sofa, 19th Century

About the Item

This gorgeous French Louis XVI style canapé was crafted during the last quarter of the 19th century, the surfaces are carved in the typical manner of the period with highly detailed ribbon work along the crest among foliage, the frame a repeating motif of beautifully detailed leaves and berries. The full arms scroll into carved acanthus wrapped around the handholds flanking a round seat stuffed over the frame, the covering old but not original; this must be changed. The canapé rests over fluted tapering legs with excellent stance, the rear legs perfectly canted ever so slightly backwards to lend a sense of balance and proportion to the form. We acquired this as a perfectly matched suite consisting of four fauteuils with this canapé, the other pieces possibly still available in our inventory - you can either view all inventory in our shop to check for their availability or contact the shop. This is a wonderful statement piece for the classical living room, crafted to last the test of time with careful adherence to a form that has remained incredibly tasteful and popular for more than two hundred years. Measurements: 35 5/8” H x approx. 50 1/8” W x approx. 29 1/2” D; 16-17 1/2” H to seat. Condition report: Covering in “poor” condition, extensive ticking and wear, some staining and discoloration; must be changed. Gilt surface with natural wear and loss throughout, particularly to the back of the frame (sticker losses). Minor joint separations/cracking, the canapé remaining very sturdy and comfortable.
