About the Item
Graceful French Louis XV-style carved and painted canapé, circa 1880–1900, upholstered in striped velvet, possibly Old World Weavers. From the Iris Apfel Collection, capturing the legendary designer’s appreciation for history, craftsmanship, and exuberant design.
France, Late 19th Century
Likely produced by a Parisian atelier in the manner of Maison Jansen or Maison Krieger
Dimensions: 33" H × 71" W × 30" D
A graceful French Louis XV-style carved and painted canapé, the serpentine backrest and scalloped apron finely molded and accented with shell and foliate carvings, raised on cabriole legs ending in scroll feet. The original painted frame shows a beautifully aged patina in soft beige and blush tones. Upholstered in a striped cut velvet in a warm palette of golden ochre, russet, terracotta, bronze, and soft aqua, lending an inviting and textural richness that complements the sinuous Rococo form. The fabric is likely from Old World Weavers, the celebrated textile firm founded by Iris and Carl Apfel, renowned for luxurious historic reproductions. The overall form and refinement suggest manufacture by a Parisian atelier working in the manner of Maison Jansen or Maison Krieger, known for their revival Louis XV seating during the Belle Époque period.
Provenance: The Iris Apfel Collection
Condition:
Good/Fair. Paint loss and wear, minor cracks, nicks, and scuffs to frame. Upholstery with light discoloration, thread pulls, and wear consistent with age and use. Structurally sound and displays beautifully, with a patina and textile character true to its period charm.
About Iris Apfel:
Iris Apfel (1921–2024) was an American style icon and interior designer celebrated for her fearless eye for pattern, color, and texture. Through Old World Weavers, the textile company she co-founded with her husband Carl, she supplied fabrics for historic residences and the White House under nine presidents. Her personal collection embodies her philosophy that “more is more and less is a bore,” combining antique craftsmanship with vibrant individuality.
