"Marshmallow" Sofa, Herman Miller , Italy, Circa 1980

About the Item

An icon of post-war design, the Marshmallow sofa represents an optimistic and heroic moment in American history. This unique sofa has a very recognizable design with 18 round, separate cushions that are held together by a chrome and black metal frame. The cushions are upholstered in blue and black faux leather. Marshmallow is made by an Italian artisanal laboratory, it is considered the most emblematic of all modernist sofas. Designed by George Nelson and Irving Harper, no more than a few hundred Marshmallow Sofas were produced between 1956 and 1963, although this retro sofa from the 1950s was reintroduced to the market by Herman Miller thirty-four years later (1999). George Nelson born in 1908 in Hartford, Connecticut, United States, is one of the emblematic figures of 20th century American design. He studied architecture at Yale University and then at the American Academy in Rome. He became the design director of Herman Miller, which made him a key figure in American design. George Nelson will run his own design agency, where he will create many products that are today considered icons of mid-century modernist. He died in 1986 in New York; these archives belong to the Vitra design Museum.

Lips - Italian space age modular island sofa, Circa 1960s
By Space Age Products
Located in PARIS, FR
The 1960s Space Age design, influenced by space exploration and atomic era tensions, brought a futuristic twist to art, cinema, and interior design. Originating amid Cold War anxieties on the American West Coast, it combined humor and avant-garde creativity, often using 'vital forms' inspired by nuclear imagery. This style features modern, cosmic-inspired furniture with vibrant plastics, reflective metals, and curved lines, creating a futuristic ambiance reminiscent of a Stanley Kubrick film. Dominated by spherical and angular shapes, it mirrors the era's fascination with space and atomic science. Enhancing brightness and contrasting with the colorful, reflective furniture. Warm colors and silver accents add to the optimistic, futuristic vibe of this 1960s-inspired design. This sofa is an emblem of the period, refreshed with Vachette leather upholstery in anthracite, a human lips sculptural structure with an hand bar for...
