About

A pair of quirky William IV - early Victorian bobbin-turned beech side chairs,

English, circa 1830-1840.

The chairs are modelled in the rare 'bobbin-turned' design, essentially a revival of the late 17th century fashion. The square backs formed of turned uprights and top rails, above the trapezoidal seats, now upholstered, raised on turned front and sabre back supports.

A lot of character; good patina; historic scuffs, knocks and repairs. Lovely accent pieces. The seats have been recently recovered in leopard print velvet.

Gillows illustrate related chairs in their Estimate Sketch Books, folio 4002, dated September 25th 1833. Designs for 'turnery work chairs' also appear in William Smee’s trade catalogues in 1830s.

For related chairs see Sotheby's, 2 March 2016, Lot 86.
