19th Century French Napoleon III Period Hand Painted Tole Fireside Chair

About the Item

Called a chaise chauffeuse or fireside chair in English due to its low seat height of 15 inches, this mid-nineteenth century French Napoleon III period hand painted tole chair features mother of pearl inlay. The chaise chauffeuse was so named because it allowed one to sit low near the warmth of the fire in wintertime. The curved seat back and frame of this black lacquered chair are detailed with gold lines and painted flowers. The seat rests on cabriolet legs in the front and gently curved legs in the back. The seat is upholstered in its original embroidered silk detailed with additional motifs of flowers and leaves. A beautiful accent chair as well as a stunning piece of three dimensional art, circa 1848-1870.
