André DOMIN & Marcel GENEVIEVRE Armchair

About the Item

In the early 1920s, as the emerging Art Deco movement was gaining momentum, two young French furniture designers, André Domin and Marcel Genevrière, founded Maison Dominique. Their creations—including armchairs, coffee tables, sideboards, and other pieces—are celebrated for their refined simplicity, bold geometric forms, and distinctive influences, particularly Cubism. Domin was a self-taught designer, while Genevrière worked as a journalist for French publications. They established the maison in 1922 and showcased their work at the Salon d’Automne that same year. Among their notable pieces is the chaise du mess des officiers du Clemenceau, made of lacquered folded and welded sheet metal (tôle pliée et soudée laquée), and bearing the mark 196 Maison Dominique—a testament to their innovative use of industrial materials within the decorative arts.
