Antique Sgabello Style Chair in Carved Wood and Kelim Upholstery. Europe. A stunning late 19th century / early 20th century Sgabello type folk art chair in hand carved wood with wonderful kelim upholstered seat. Probably Alpine of origin. Marvelous and fascinating carvings on the backrest - showing a grotesque figure with open mouth and two faces looking left and right. Very intriguing. Truly a very special chair. One of the best examples we’ve seen. Comes in a good and highly original condition. About ORNAMENTUM ORNAMENTUM - where we find perfection in imperfection, love a good patina and are always on the lookout for wonderful and unique pieces both vintage and antique. We are based in Belgium near the Dutch border.

A remarkable design - quintessentially Chinese and of monumental proportions. Should have been a chair for someone important. The design rooted in the Ming-style from several hundred years before this chair was created - showing straight and strict proportions combined with sculptural and flowing shapes all hand carved from solid wood. Remarkable to see a chair this 'boxy' could be so sculptural and dynamic in appearance. Also, this chair is quite comfortable to sit in. Whereas in Japan it was the custom to kneel on the floor or to squat on cushions, chairs were the rule in China from an early date - both for dining and relaxing.
