Baroque Red Damask Portuguese Chair, 18th Century

About the Item

A tall and imponent Baroque Períod chair with legs connected to each other by H-shaped crossbars, curved and counter-curved legs where the counter-curved lines are visible, with a movable cushion with a grid upholstered in red damask. Recently reviewed the joinery, in excellent condition. In the 18th Century seating furniture, especially chairs, portuguese craftsmen excelled in combining French and English models, creating unique shapes and styles that differed from their inspirations. This was possible thanks to the use of different types of wood in the national joinery. This French-English combination is evident in the use of the French backrest called the violoné, which can be plain in solid wood or upholstery, and in the state furniture associated with the clergy and court. The lack of pre-existing models allowed Portuguese woodcarvers to express their creativity. The result was the production of pieces of high quality and refinement, reminiscent of French fauteils, which were usually upholstered.
