"The RAIR Chair", Yellow Accent Chair from Recycled Artist In Residency (RAIR)

About the Item

"RAIR Chair II" is a one-of-a-kind indoor low-back chair. This piece was inspired by the classic American lawn chair as part of the Recycled Artist In Residency's newest collection, created in collaboration with designer Carl Durkow. This chair was welded and handcrafted by Durkow in Philadelphia, PA, with repurposed electrical conduit, repurposed webbing materials sourced from Revolution Recovery construction waste center. The pieces were carefully bent by hand to reduce any energy use to stay true to the repurposing process. This piece measures 22”h x 34”w x 26”d with the low seat at 8" high. This armchair with its classic design and sustainable production process is both a place to relax and a conversation starter functional sculpture. It is perfect for adding color and uniqueness to your living room or to your home in general. RAIR's mission is to challenge the perception of waste culture by providing a unique platform for artists at the intersection of art and industry. Situated inside a construction and demolition waste recycling company in northeast Philadelphia, RAIR offers artists studio space and access to more than 500 tons of materials per day. Since its inception in 2010, RAIR’s flagship Residency Program has established itself as a unique opportunity for emerging, mid-career, and established artists. By facilitating artists’ direct engagement with the waste stream, RAIR encourages residents to consider their studio practice through the lens of sustainability and to thoughtfully reassess their processes of material sourcing and waste disposal.
