Eight Italian Chairs in Carved Walnut, Genoa, circa 1750

$14,556.68per set

About

Eight walnut chairs, two with slight differences Genoa, mid-18th century Six chairs measure: height 98 cm - 46 cm at the seat x 58 cm x 50 cm (38.58" -18.11" at the seat x 22.83" x 19.68"); Two chairs measure: height 101 cm - 46 cm at the seat x 60 cm x 54 cm (39.76" -18.11" at the seat x 23.62" x 21.25"). Each one weighs circa kg 10.50 (circa 23.14 lb). Good state of conservation. Some defects due to use. Two chairs have some differences in size, decoration and line. The textile coverings are modern. The eight walnut chairs have a mixtilinear layout decorated with rocaille relief carvings (in Genoa still today these are called “pellacce”) and with ribs; the legs are shaped and end in curls. The padding on the backrests and seats is removable and is upholstered in modern damask fabric with floral decoration in ochre on a grey background. This type of chair derives its inspiration from the models of Paris, where in the mid-18th century, during the Louis XV period, taste evolved towards more comfortable and lighter forms of furniture. The chair thus became softer and more comfortable, with a wide seat and lower back; the legs had S-curved shapes. Sitting was easier and the seat left room for the voluminous skirts of the era. The Rococo style demanded a greater simplification of sculptural elements in favor of ornamental carvings taken from a more naturalistic decorative repertoire. This typology was successful in Genoa and was represented in many noble palaces of the city, becoming a typical, characteristic piece of furniture. In addition to parade furniture, which was usually made of carved and gilded wood, Genoa also produced furniture with very similar workmanship and decorations, but it was simplified and often made of polychrome lacquered wood or natural wood. This production was intended for the private areas of the houses, such as sitting rooms and bedrooms. This set of chairs has two slightly different specimens which might characterize the head of the table. Bibliography: L. Caumont Caimi, Bancalari ed artigiani dei mobili d’arredamento in di D.
