8x Elm "Chlacc" chairs, S45, Pierre Chapo, France, 1979
About the Item
CHLACC ! Like the dry and satisfying sound of two pieces of wood coming together to perfection.
This name is in fact the name of the patented system allowing the manufacture of these chairs, understand "homogeneous laminated construction assembled glued and nailed".
If at a glance their construction seems obvious, in 1979 it was a brilliant technical feat inspired by American finger-jointed wood processes. Indeed, the use of a multitude of small pieces of wood with square sections, solidly assembled together, opened up the field of possibilities for designing new structures.
Light and sculptural, these chairs, which look like a small Eiffel Tower, have eleven joints points to guarantee perfect solidity, contrasting with the finesse of the intertwined pieces of wood that compose them. It is certainly one of the Chapo seats that stands out the most from his other creations in terms of massiveness.
A very minimalist model which, naively, reminds us of the structured lines of certain kabuto (samurai helmet).
Note that despite appearances, the S45 is very comfortable !
