Empire Style Six French Chairs " Gondola" Model

About the Item

We kindly suggest that you read the entire description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our objects. Six sophisticated and beautiful French chairs " a gondola" model made of fine walnut wood and with seat upholstery in sturdy purple cotton; very refined are the rounded carvings made by hand where the backrest joins the front legs; the six chairs, due to their practical and comfortable shape, are optimal to be placed around a table as dining chairs; they are a typical and classic example of the empire style in the so-called " a gondola" shape. "Empire style gondola chairs" are usually made of fine wood and refer to a particular type of chair that combines the empire and gondola styles in furniture. The empire style is characterized by regular shapes, and straight and austere lines, inspired by ancient Rome and classical Greece. In contrast, the gondola style, which characterizes the backrest, with an elegant and rounded curve, is reminiscent of the shape of a Venetian gondola. The model was very successful and was offered in various designs and invoices. This chair of great comfort and innovative form was very popular in the period of the French Empire, during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, was also proposed after the decline of the Empire, in the Restoration, to disappear briefly under the reign of Louis Philippe and then reappear in the Second Empire, and again in the early 1900s it was successfully revived. The chairs were created by real Master Craftsmen between 1910 and 1920 in an artisan workshop in the town of Pont-de-Beauvoisin, a French commune in the Isère department, nicknamed the city of furniture for its ancient tradition of woodworking. On the wooden structure of the chairs, we did not consider doing any restoration because their surface veiled patina and small imperfections make them truly alluring and fascinating and attest to their antiquity and authenticity; the purple cotton upholstery, made in recent times, is what we found on the chairs when we bought them, is in good condition, and being attached to the seat board with Velcro, is removable and washable. Our chairs can be elegant and distinctive elements in the decor of a home or room in the classical style, charming and sophisticated objects, compelling and versatile for everyday use as well. The chairs are in good condition. Measurements width cm.49, depth cm.40, height cm.78, seat cm.47. For all our shipments we use special packing materials (custom-made wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.

We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Particular and elegant chair with a solid and functional structure; the most interesting part of the chair is the elaborate and imaginative backrest with a harmonious and refined design; in the middle, there is precious woodwork, carved with skill and ability by a master cabinetmaker; the front legs have been meticulously turned to give them a light and proportionate shape, while the rear ones have a slightly curved square section; the seat top is removable and a wooden pin on the front crossbar allows the top itself to fit perfectly into its natural housing. The seat upholstery was replaced in ancient times and is in good condition (a bit of wear on the front, see photo) so we did not consider doing any restoration on the whole chair because its authentic look and slight imperfections make it really seductive and fascinating and attest its antiquity. The chair was handcrafted in Denmark in perfect Biedermeier style using African...
