About the Item

18th Century Portuguese D. Maria I “Coiffeuse” Side Chair in Rosewood Origin: Portugal, late 18th century Style: D. Maria I (Portuguese Neoclassicism) Materials: Solid rosewood, upholstery Dimensions: Height 91 cm (35.8 in); Width 52 cm (20.5 in); Depth 43 cm (16.9 in) Description An extremilly rare, elegant and finely proportioned Queen D. Maria I (1777-1816) period “Coiffeuse” side chair, dating from the late 18th century, crafted in Pau-Santo (Brazilian rosewood), a highly prized tropical hardwood known for its rich tonal variation and dense, silky texture. This refined example of Portuguese Neoclassical furniture features a characteristic shield-shaped backrest with a delicately carved lyre motif, echoing classical Greco-Roman aesthetics. The gentle curvature and openwork design of the splat lend visual lightness and grace to the piece. It was designed to allow the person that was seating, to have it's hair brushed without interference. The seat is traditionally upholstered and currently dressed in a pale yellow fabric with a subtle geometric pattern. The squared seat rail is supported by tapered, fluted front legs with turned feet, referencing the influence of French Directoire and English Hepplewhite styles, both of which influenced Portuguese court taste in the reign of Queen Maria I. Originally used as a coiffeuse chair in dressing rooms or salons, this piece embodies the delicate craftsmanship and ornamental restraint typical of the period. Its architectural form, exceptional wood choice, and dignified proportions make it a highly collectible object for connoisseurs of 18th-century Iberian decorative arts. Condition Excellent condition consistent with age. Minor signs of use and wear. The structure is solid and stable. The upholstery was recently re-done, and is in very good condition. Provenance José Sanina Antiquário J. Andrade Private Collection This chair is a representative example of aristocratic furnishings from the D. Maria I period, a time marked by refined classical influences and the use of exotic timbers sourced from Brazil. Likely made for a dressing room.
