A fine pair of Regency mahogany armorial hall chairs attributed Gillows
About the Item
A fine pair of Regency mahogany armorial hall chairs attributed Gillows, each with an ogee back supported on C-scrolls and circular dished seat raised on turned and reeded outswept front legs, the rectangular section back legs joined by a shaped stretcher, richly carved with the Homan family crest comprising a lion’s head surmounted by a large hat, all surrounded by fleshy acanthus scrolls. English, circa 1815.
Footnote: Sir William Jackson Homan, 1st Baronet (1771 – 1852), was an Irish baronet. He married Lady Charlotte Stuart, daughter of John Stuart, 1st Marquess of Bute, in 1797 and was created Baronet of Dunlum, Country Westmeath in 1801. Homan and his family lived in Dromana, one of the Marquis of Bute’s many residences, where he acted as agent for his brother in law Lord Henry Stuart and, eventually, the latter’s son Henry until 1847. When he died without heir, his only son having predeceased him, the title lapsed.

- Fine Pair of George III Mahogany Wine Cisterns Attributed to GillowsBy Gillows of Lancaster & LondonLocated in Lymington, HampshireEach cistern is in the form of a fluted vase on a rectangular pedestal. The lead-lined vases have brass handles, removable lids with pineapple finials and taps. The crossbanded pedestals have cupboard doors enclosing slatted shelves for warming plates in one and a lead-lined slops drawers, a tambour fronted shelf and a cellaret in the other. Susan Stuart, 'Gillow of Lancaster and London', 2008 vol 1 p308-315 illustrates many pedestal urns including the drawings for Workington Hall, Cumbria, dated 1788. PLates 342 and 343 show pedestals with a similar arrangement of shelves and drawers. Thomas Sheraton explained the functions of dining room pedestals in his 'Drawing Book' of 1793: 'IN spacious dining rooms the sideboards are often made without drawers of any sort, having simply a rail, a little ornament...Category

- Large Late Regency Six Door Mahogany Bookcase Attributed to GillowsLocated in Lymington, HampshireA large and impressive late Regency six door mahogany bookcase attributed to Gillows, the upper section with a triple breakfront cornice above glazed doors with brass diamond trellis grilles, each enclosing adjustable shelves, the base with panelled cupboards decorated with book-matched flame veneers between turned columns with palmette terminals. English, circa 1815. Footnote. A double Breakfront Library Bookcase Attributed to Gillows of Lancaster, c.1820 The bookcase of large form but of elegant proportions, having a pleasing low waist, always desirable on case furniture of this sort, brass grilles, a plinth base veneered in the finest mahogany and intriguing inlaid quatrefoil shaped escutcheons to the central doors. Designed in the early 19th century “Roman” fashion, this bookcase is one of a small group of such pieces that have been linked in the past to designs provided by the Wyatt family of architects (see for example a bookcase of remarkably similar form offered by Christie’s in London on the 16th of December 2010 with an estimate of £40-£60,000). Although any link with Wyatt must remain purely speculative, the attribution of this bookcase to the firm of Gillows of Lancaster can be made with a much higher degree of confidence. This attribution is based partly on a fine suite of similar library bookcases supplied to Tatton Park and discussed in detail by Dr. Susan Stuart in Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, page 375-377, plates 443 & 444. Of even greater interest is a design for a complete...Category
